Introduction

Hello All!
I am Melanie, I am a fifth year Film and Media Studies Major. I have several different sides. I have my Disney side, my film side, my marching band side and my love for travel. Now as a kid growing up in a family of musicians I was involved in music. I have been in band since the sixth grade but my real passion has been dance and singing. I was still in band in high school but I was more involved in color guard. This has allowed me to express my self through music and dance. This path has taken me to be one of the four color guard captains of the Pride of Oklahoma.  I’m excited to see what this season will bring for the Pride and OUr football team!

My film side isn’t one of my strongest sides but I love it. The idea of creating a set of images in your mind then producing it to a screen so everyone else can see it is amazing. This is why the movie Inception is one of my favorite movies. Because it is the definition of what a film is. When you think of film for job there are four major categories they can fall under, Directing, writing, editing, or doing something in production.  My problem is I’m interested in all of them. And anytime on a set or a position and get to try new things I add that skill to the list of things I want to do in film. There are so many possibilities with film. You can do pretty much anything you have a passion for on the film set.

Oh I forgot to mention above that I also love photography! I carry my camera everywhere with me.  I actually run my own photography business! You can check it out Here!

With the band and film has given me the opportunity to travel the country. I have gotten to travel to Indiana, Texas, Kansas, Louisiana, West Virginia, and Florida several times. With film I have gotten to go to New York, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Maryland, and of course all over my home state Virginia. Traveling is a huge part of me. If you look at my Pinterest board you can see all the places I want to go. The top destination right now is Scotland and Ireland!  These locations are so beautiful and filled with so much history. And I mean who wouldn’t want to visit? Just look at it!

The other location that’s top on my list is to visit all the Disney parks in the world! I have been to three of them so far, Disney land in California, Disney world in Florida and Disneyland Paris. Speaking of Disney, this is one of my top dreams. I would love to work for the company again. I worked for Walt Disney world resort From January 26th to June 15th. I would love to work for the studios. Any job there would be amazing! Getting to creating magic in film and sharing that magic with people would be the best thing ever! There are so many things I want to do and can’t wait to see what my future holds.

  1. Ahh, I’m so glad I got put in your group for this first week. I’m an FMS minor, and I really connected with everything you said in your paragraph about that. I completely understand what you mean about wanting to do All the Film Things, too. My life dream has always been to write for TV, but the more I’ve learned about everything, the more I’ve realized all of the job categories are appealing in their own rights. I would love to do any of them. Just being part of bringing stories from dreams to reality would be incredible.

It’s so cool that you’ve gotten to travel so much for that and the band, too. I studied in England for a while this summer and got to visit Wales while I was there, which was amazing, but I definitely want to go back someday to check Ireland and Scotland off the list. And that castle in the post looks amazing—the really old ones are always the coolest, I think.

  2. Hi Melanie! We have a bit in common! I was in marching band in high school at Edmond Memorial High School in Edmond, OK. I played the saxophone for 8 years (middle and high school) and was a drum major for my marching band for 3 years. My brother is the real musical one, as he graduated in 2013 with a degree in music education and is now a band director at our alma mater.

I also love to travel. Last summer (2015), I traveled to 7 countries mostly in Europe and fell in love. The UK was definitely one of my favorites spots, but I haven't been to Ireland or Scotland and they are on my list, too!! My great-grandparents were from Scotland so I'd love to get a chance to see where my ancestry reigns from.

  3. Oh, you are in the Pride, Melanie! How cool! There was someone from the Pride who was in Indian Epics... but now I cannot remember who... let me see... here we go: it is Kimber. Maybe you two know each other! And Inception was such a genius concept: you could actually use that as a way to create a project for this class, where a character would "fall" from one story into the next into the next and into the next. That's actually how frametales work, with stories within stories within stories. It's sometimes called the "Chinese Box" technique, although you see it the most in the story collections from India more than China. 1001 Nights is a famous example! Anyway, you can see what you think about that as you explore the possibilities: I think a project inspired by the STYLE of Inception, using traditional myths and folktales, could be really fabulous! :-)

  4. Hey Melanie,

I'm an FMS minor so I can totally relate to the stuff you said in your paragraph about that. It's so hard to figure out exactly what area of production to go into. Especially since you don't take a lot of the more in-depth classes until later on in your college career. Also, I love Inception. It's one of my favorites. Disney World and Disney Land are both so much fun! I can't even imagine working at one of the parks. I'm sure it wouldn't even feel like a job!

  5. Hey Melanie, you are a girl with many hats! I think it's great that you are such a musical person, I took dance but that is the closest thing to music I have done! Film making sounds like such a great field to study. I think it is awesome that you got to work for Disney World! I am a Mechancial Engineer, I have kinda wanted to work with their imagineers team there. I also like your places you want to go board! I currently have one and the top of my list is Nashville TN.

  6. Wow, you seem like a very cultured individual and you put my little introduction to shame! I have a overwhelming want to travel. Wanderlust has been flowing in my veins for years. I’ll go anywhere just to experience it. To the dinkiest towns to large cities. Sadly, I haven’t been out of state TO MUCH. I know that it will happen for me eventually, it’s just a matter of when! I had the opportunity to live in California and that’s one I will never forget and I have been all over Oklahoma and Texas. I have at least seen Denver, CO and Phoenix, AZ but I have never ventured outside of the airport (so I’m not sure that counts). I love the idea of your major, it’s wonderful and I can’t wait to see one of your films in the future!

  7. Hi Melanie! I also love Disney and travel. I was in band when I was in sixth grade, but unfortunately had to quit because I was already dancing 25 hours a week. My sister however was in band so I still got to go to all of her competitions! That’s so cool that you got to work for the Walt Disney resort. I am also passionate about film. My minor was initially Film & Media Studies but I ended up changing it to International Studies because I wanted to travel more. Anyways, I hope you’re having a good semester so far and I’m looking forward to reading more of your posts!

  8. Hi! I think it's so cool that you want to visit all of the Disney parks because I want to do that as well! Unfortunately, I haven't been to any. So, just being able to go to one would be awesome. I used to work at a movie theater and I loved it so much that I was convinced that I wanted to do work in movies, but it didn't really work out. I still love movies though and I think your love for film is awesome.

  9. Ah I love all of the Disney Parks! I have been to so many, but not all of them. I absolutely LOVE the Harry Potter theme park in Orlando; definitely my favorite one. Film is amazing; one of my best friends is a film major and he absolutely loves it. Also, my brother is going to try and join the pride next year once he graduates high school! My dad was in pride when he attended OU so my brother really wants to try and get into it as well! I've met so many awesome people in the pride that it's actually made me want to join myself! I love hearing all the cool things you guys get to do. I hope you get to fulfill everything you want to do this semester!

  10. Wow, I am so jealous that you have been able to travel so much while also doing what you love. I have a friend who studied abroad with Disney last spring and she fell in love with it as well! I was so jealous...she would always post snap stories of going to ride all of the rides during the day while we were all here in Norman going to class. I have a few friends in my sorority who are in the Pride of Oklahoma as well and they love it! I used to play the piano when I was younger, but I wish I had stuck with it because I wish I could currently play an instrument. I think that it is cool that you like disney and the magic that it carries; I bet you can really relate that to a lot of the stories you will write for this class!

  11. Hi Melanie! I am SO impressed with your long lists of talents. You are incredible! It must be amazing performing in the palace on the prairie! I will definitely look for you at our next football game. ☺ It is so cool that you have been able to travel all over the country. I wish I could visit places more! I can’t wait to read more of your awesome writing.

  12. Hey Melanie! Nice to meet you.

I’ve always wanted to be a good dancer, so I think it’s great that you’re able to do that! My only dancing experience comes from the Just Dance video games.

It’s also very cool that you’ve gotten to travel to all those places. New York is somewhere i’d love to see one day, and Ireland would be beautiful as well. I hope you get the chance to travel there soon!

As far as Disney Parks go I’ve only been to Disney Land, but I really want to see Disney World sometime soon. Working for Disney sounds like it’d be amazing!

  13. Ahhhh this is so awesome! I'm just going to talk about Disney the entire time if that is okay. I have been to Disneyworld over 40 times and also to Disneyland at least 6 times. It is definitely my favorite place in the world and makes me so happy. That is awesome that you worked there. Where did you work? And what did you do? Sorry about that jumbling of words, I just got excited thinking about going again.

  14. Hi Melanie!
I love your name… reminds me of the Little Mermaid. Which to some degree at least goes with your major. That’s awesome that you get to continue your passions in college. I really wish I knew more about filming! It is a great way to capture a moment and be able to live through the eyes of the person behind the camera or the people in the shot. Scotland or Ireland would be such an adventure! They are on the top of my list of places to go as well. I love how positive your outlook is and how excited you are about what you want to do. That is something I need to work on for sure. I am totally stressing! Good luck with everything and I hope you get to work with Disney again!

PS I’m not sure if you’ll get a notification but I’m about to respond to your comment on my post!

  15. Melanie,

I understand your struggle in being in interested in multiple facets of your chosen profession. I have the same problem myself. I can also relate to your desire to travel. Scotland and Ireland are both also on my list. However, I am not that worried about seeing every Disney park.

Thank you so much for sharing, good luck with the rest of your semester and with graduation.

I love travelling too and I have visited so many countries. Travelling is by far the best thing I love to do I think. I look forward to read your future stories.

  17. Hey Melanie!

I think its so cool that you are so talented in music and dance, thats such a special quality and I think its awesome that you have utilized it so much. I honestly wish I had a single musical bone in my body, but I dont but i love watching other people express their talents through music. I also think its super cool that youre a film and media studies major, I'm a huge movie person and I think it would be so cool to make my own movie. Anyways I'm glad I got to get to know you a little better!

  18. Hi Melanie!
I am also a 5th year so I can totally relate to how you must feel!! You seem very busy though. I also danced growing up and loved it! I didn't continue dancing after high school so I'm glad that you continued to! Im sure being apart of Pride was such an amazing experience. I have a couple of friends that are film and media majors, good luck with that! What exactly are you wanting to do with your degree? I am going to disneyland in Paris this summer and I am so excited, I am high disney fan!
Hope everything works out and good luck in your classes!

  19. Hey, Melanie!

You interests fascinate me! I think it's really cool that you seem to know what you want out of life- and you seem to know how to go about getting it done! I think it's super cool that you're part of the Pride. I always love watching the halftime show. I really like photography, too, but it's more of a side hobby for me. My main subject of my 'photography' is my dog, as you can probably see from my project. Nice to meet you; I can't wait to read your stories!

  20. Hey Melanie. I think it is a really unique goal to visit all the Disney Land parks in the world. Since I grew up in Japan, my parents sometimes took my brother and me to the Tokyo Disney Land. It is where I rode my first rollercoaster and probably when I realized that I am an adrenaline junkie.

  21. Hi Melanie! Wow, it seems like you’re really passionate about all the things that you do, which is super cool. I like that none of them seem like half-hearted hobbies, but rather are things that you have really given yourself over to. That’s so cool that you got to work for Disney! It looks as though you have the right degree for it, so best of luck as you move closer and closer to real life stuff like that!:)

  22. Hey Melanie,

Nice to meet you! I really feel like I did in some way because you included so many details about your life in this introduction. I'm quite impressed!

It's always so awesome to see when someone has passion, and it's clear to me that you really love the creative arts, no matter what form they take.

Though you haven't figured it all out yet with what you want to do, I'm sure you will! Best of luck to you in whatever you decide to do!

  23. Hello! I think you have some really awesome interests, and it's so great that you're still kind of figuring things out. It sounds like you've been able to travel to some really great places through the University. I also love to travel and managed to hit every state west of Oklahoma and all but five east of here. My dream trip is London, I am currently working towards saving so I can travel there as soon as possible!

  24. Nice to meet you Melanie. You are very fascinating! Scotland and Ireland are at the top of my to go list too. I have always wanted to visit there and can't wait for the day that I actually can. I think it is awesome that you are interested in so many things, I know that makes planning your future kind of hard, but it makes you super interesting! Not to mention it sounds like all your hobbies/passions have led you to many different places which is awesome!!!! Good luck to you in all you hope to accomplish!

  25. Hi Melanie!
Wow, you have such an interesting life! I am very jealous of all of your travels- I finally went to Europe for my first time this summer and it was amazing! I want to go back sometime. You should start a blog I feel like you would be good at it.
